Stop requiring former foster youth to pay for their abusers funerals.

The Issue

In the United States of America former Foster youth are required by law to pay for the funeral expenses incurred for their biological parents if they are not legally adopted by the age of 18. This puts a lot of former Foster youth in a difficult situation. More often than not, the child is removed from the home because they are being abused by an immediate relative, most likely their parents. Many of these children continue on to live their lives without contact with their family members ever again. To be told years since you've spoken with your abuser that you are now financially responsible for their funeral and burial service is an insult to say the least. This needs to change. The average cremation can cost more than $1100, and most former foster youth would not be considered "high earners". The majority of U.S. states have laws requiring the family to pay the funeral expenses in a timely manner otherwise they can incur criminal charges and be charged up to three times what the state had to pay for cremation. I ask that you stand with me and tell our government stop forcing former Foster youth to pay to bury their abusers.
