False advertising is illegal, but only to a certain extent. People constantly see ads for mobile games, which sometimes show little to no actual content of the game. (Ex: Advertising a puzzle, like a maze, when the actual content of the game is a completely separate puzzle, like a collection of riddles, or a racing game)

Of course, almost all of these games are free, but how would you feel if your favorite game series had followed suit, and you paid around $50 to buy a game that had little to none of the content that was shown in advertisements?

Not only that, sometimes little children (or anyone of any age) who see these games and download them want to play what they saw in the advertisement, not a completely opposite version of the game. The disappointment that follows suit is kind of sad. I’ve been in that position before, seeing something cool, and then finding out that the game isn’t as it said it was.

I won’t explain it too much, but I did a little investigation and downloaded one of these falsely advertised games to see how they got money, since a free game has to earn revenue somehow. Advertisements were not shown in the game. But there were boosters which helped you in the game that you could pay money to get instead of saving them up.

Here’s what was most likely happening: people download the game, thinking it’s like the advertisements, but delete it when they realize it’s not. However, the download still counts in the game’s total downloads, even though it was deleted. Some people who were playing the game might have kept it, but paid for the boosters. Keep showing false advertising, and soon it will be featured on the App Store or Google Play store. From there, advertising the game will not be as necessary, and decrease spending. The game then can earn more revenue since it won’t be fooling as many people, or the advertisements are replaced with truthful ones.

To stop this, it’s pretty simple: ban false advertising altogether, without any loopholes or exceptions. Even if this doesn’t pass, game companies will know that there are tons of people who find their tricks to be annoying and should be outlawed.

I know that it may not seem like a lot, but I dislike how games become popular and prosperous in an unfair way, and the method could soon spread to other game companies. I don’t care about advertising in games, as long as it’s not false advertising.

Please share this with people you know and spread the word.
