Rename The Russell Senate Office Building to The McCain Public Service Building
Rename The Russell Senate Office Building to The McCain Public Service Building
The Issue
The Senate Office Building should be named for for an American with a history of integrity and commitment to public service, as a reminder to all who enter that they enter to serve their constituency, the citizens of the United States of America.
Senator Russell was a long-time member of the Senate, but he was a segregationist. He worked to oppose to anti-lynching bills and the furtherance of civil rights in our country more than 100 years after the end of the Civil War. Senator Russell is not the kind of man that we should name public buildings for.
John McCain had a life-long career in public service, with a high degree of integrity, and service. He lost his bid to be President of the United States, and quickly said "Obama is my president." He was a fair fighter. He showed people that it was possible for us to get along as two parties in one country, and he didn't quit. Not when he was captured, not when he lost the 2008 presidential election, and not when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. He continued to serve in the Senate until his death, always putting his country, and his constituents first. This is the kind of person our Senators should be reminded of when they go to work.
