Polarizing television programs that brand themselves as "news" further divide and pit Americans against each other. Both left and right leaning media outlets push extreme views and unfounded assumptions to sell drama and attract viewers. These shows profit from creating a divide between Americans and it needs to stop. During the 2020 election this divide has never been clearer, and much of the anger on both sides is based around information that has been fed to them from outlets they mistakingly trust as a reliable source of information. Social media platforms have started taking steps to report dangerous and misleading post as misinformation, I think it is important that we apply the same principles to television.

Programs that do not follow a set of journalistic standards that ensure fair and balanced reporting can not include "news" in their program or show titles. Programs that tow the line or consistently push false information that has been proven to be false will need to include a disclaimer during the show that informs viewers that the program is entertainment, and not news. These standards should be created by an independent board of trained journalists whose identities are representative of the diverse fabric of the American public.
