US Legislators and Governors: Please Congratulate Biden and Harris
The Issue
We are asking all individual US Senators, US Representatives, and state Governors to reach out without any further delay to congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their victory in the November 2020 US Presidential election. These conventional gestures are vitally important for several reasons:
We need to restore faith in our electoral system. When faith in elections erodes, democracy is in danger. This election was free and fair: There is no credible evidence that there was any amount of voter fraud that would have altered election results. President Trump's legal challenges are falling flat, one after another, and will continue to do so. Please send the signal to all Americans that you have faith in elections.
We need to respect the will of the people. Not only was the election fair, it represented the will of the American people to a greater degree than previous elections thanks to record-high voter turnout. Please signal that you respect the voters' will.
We need you to set an example of good governance. Suppose that a future President from the party opposed to yours refused to accept election results: how would you want your Congressional colleagues to behave? You would likely want them to show leadership in accepting election results, for the sake of popular control of government. You can set the tone for future leadership by accepting President Trump's defeat with grace even if he does not. Please set the kind of example you'd like future leaders to set if the roles were reversed.
We need you to begin the work of bipartisan cooperation. Vitally important issues are facing our nation, and we need our President and lawmakers to work together to solve them. That requires showing the kind of conventional civility that enables bipartisan cooperation. It's better to start now rather than to withhold the traditional gesture of congratulation. Please bring a cooperative spirit back to government, starting now.
We need you to help us change the tone of our discourse. Liberals and conservatives in ordinary, everyday life have a harder time talking with each other than just a few years ago. Now is the time for you to help us rebuild civil society by setting a good example. A congratulatory phone call is a simple first step to take.
Please make the call. Thank you for hearing us.
