Break Up the College Board Monopoly

Break Up the College Board Monopoly

The Issue

The College Board was originally started as a way to ensure that students had access to higher education. While that may have been true a number of years ago, it appears that now CB has become something reminiscent of a scam that exploits students' fears of college admissions. They make us pay hundreds of dollars to take the tests that they have created themselves, and if we don't then we can say goodbye to our chances of getting accepted into our dream colleges. They maintain the status of a nonprofit, meaning they pay no taxes, yet they make 840 million dollars in revenue annually. Students who can't pay for high quality test prep suffer, and underfunded schools cut AP after AP class, which all create inequities with the poorest students of color suffering the most.

The uncertainty caused by the pandemic already has high school students extremely stressed about their futures, and CB just doesn't seem to empathize. While teenage suicide rates increase, CB is adding strange new rules for AP testing and provides no true clarity on the status of SAT administration. It's clear that they simply don't care about helping students, but rather their own profits.

If the government was to step in and act as the new CB, students would have access to free higher quality test prep, more funding for AP courses in high schools, and overall just a more stress-free college admissions process. No one would have to pay for any of these tests. The tests themselves would be restructured to actually ensure that they correctly assess students' abilities. And most importantly, we would have a voice in how the entity would operate. They would be held accountable for their actions. Students are angry, and it's time that our anger manifests into legitimate action. We need to stop the monopoly that is the College Board before it can exploit any more students, and make college admissions something that isn't dependent on having enough money or living in the right area. Sign this petition to encourage Congress to take action and protect the interests of students who just want to be able to pursue a good college education.
