U.S. now lacks meaningful clean-car rules. Tell Congress to restore federal standards.

The Issue

The United States has effectively eliminated meaningful federal clean-car standards.

With the repeal of the EPA’s endangerment finding and the removal of penalties for fuel economy violations, automakers are no longer required to meaningfully reduce vehicle emissions or improve fuel efficiency.

Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Clean-car standards were designed not only to cut pollution, but to protect public health, reduce fuel costs for families, and keep American automakers competitive in a rapidly electrifying global market.

Today, most major economies — including the European Union, China, and Japan — maintain mandatory vehicle efficiency or emissions standards. Without federal rules, the U.S. risks falling behind in automotive innovation while increasing pollution and long-term fuel costs.

Restoring federal clean-car standards is not about ideology. It is about economic competitiveness, consumer protection, public health, and climate responsibility.

We call on Congress to pass legislation reinstating mandatory greenhouse gas and fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles, along with meaningful enforcement mechanisms.

American drivers deserve cleaner air. American manufacturers deserve clear, stable rules. And America deserves to compete — not retreat.

Restore federal clean-car standards now.
