Did you know that Native Americans make up about 1.7 % of the population in the United States, which equals to about 5.2 million people (Census, 2010)?

This means that collectively, they have voting power to impact the social and political landscape of America. Yet, their votes are consistently undermined with roadblocks such as cumbersome voting requirements, language barriers, lack of access to voting polls, among many more.

The most current occurrence is the Voter ID Law in North Dakota which requires voters to provide an ID with a street address in which many Native Americans are not provided by the US Postal Service.

We firmly believe that voting is a fundamental human right and is the bedrock of building thriving communities. Although the Voter ID Law has reached a settlement allowing tribal IDs for voting, this does not completely lift Native American voter suppression. In fact, this compromise may very well create more work and confusion just before election time.

Let's put pressure on the North Dakota government to take further steps to ensure that Native Americans have every tool at their disposal to participate in the governance process of America by repealing the Voter ID Law.

We are a group of California State University Fullerton Master of Social Work students who are passionate about Human Rights - more specifically voting rights. We envision that this petition will help to highlight the violation of human rights as it relates to North Dakota Native American nations including the Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara Nation (Three Affiliated Tribes), the Spirit Lake Nation, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Nation. This is a timely issue given that America is in the midst of a highly anticipated election season.

We would like your supports to repeal the Voter ID Law. Your signature will increase the pressure put on Doug Burgum, the current governor of North Dakota.
