Stop Corporal Punishment in Schools

Stop Corporal Punishment in Schools
The Issue
What would you do if your preschooler was rushed to the ER because a principal’s paddling triggered an asthma attack? What if your child came home from school and couldn’t sit, due to severe welts or tailbone damage from a paddle? What if your nonverbal child couldn’t tell you they are afraid to go back to school after being paddled for something they had no control over because of a disability?
It’s hard to imagine any of these scenarios are even possible, but they have all happened. More children will be traumatized and harmed from this outdated and cruel practice unless H.R.2268, Ending Corporal Punishment in Schools Act of 2015, is passed.
The effects of corporal punishment are alarming. It teaches children to solve problems through physical violence, increases aggressive behaviour and crimes, and lowers test scores. Students have sustained injuries from bruises to broken bones at school. Some have even died.
Every 30 seconds a child is corporally punished at school during the school year. Black children are beat with wooden paddles at a disproportionately high rate. Children with special needs and disabilities are paddled excessively.
Prisoners are protected from corporal punishment. Striking another person is also banned in our military and in mental institutions. Yet children can be repeatedly struck with a large, thick wooden paddle for minor offenses at school.
Corporal punishment can’t be regulated enough to protect children from harm and schools from liability. Experts recommend removing corporal punishment from schools. These kids are counting on us to make a difference.
Do what’s best for our schools! Share and sign this petition to pass the Ending Corporal Punishment In Schools Act of 2015, H.R. 2268. Show Congress there's tremendous grassroots support for this bill by adding your name in support right now!
Thank You,
