Donald Trump has made repeated comments indicating that he will not honor the results of a presidential election in which he loses and has refused to say that he will follow a peaceful transfer of power. This represents a severe threat to American democracy and must be combatted.

The prospect of a nonpartisan committee to oversee voting results represents a safeguard against this unlawful theft of power from American voters. This has been proposed and supported by both Bernie Sanders and former Trump director of national intelligence Dan Coats. Such a commission would “monitor those mechanisms and confirm for the public that the laws and regulations governing them have been scrupulously and expeditiously followed — or that violations have been exposed and dealt with — without political prejudice and without regard to political interests of either party” as well as monitor “forces that seek to harm our electoral system through interference, fraud, disinformation or other distortions.”
