Why this petition matters

Rashia Wilson of Tampa, Florida is currently serving a 21- year sentence in federal prison for wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and being a felon in possession of firearms. Rashia is a black woman who is a victim of poverty and the United States Criminal Justice System. The Judge on her case, Judge James S. Moody, is a senior judge who came out of “retirement” with the sole intent to give her the disproportionate sentence. This is unlawful and is an example of racial disparities in federal criminal sentences.

Back in December 2012 Wilson pleaded guilty to the felon-in-possession charge, and later to the wire fraud and aggravated identity theft counts pursuant to a plea agreement on April 3, 2013. At the time of her sentencing, Instead of Judge Moody consolidating the cases, he took them up in succession.  On July 2013, Rashia Wilson was sentenced to 252 months in federal prison. Since then has attempted 4 appeals which have all been denied. Judge Moody’s sentencing is unlawful and is an example of racial disparities in Federal crime sentences.

In the United States African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times that the rates of Whites. Black women in the United States are Incarcerated twice that of white women. Rashia Wilson is one of the many cases in which African Americans are given harsher sentences for non-violent crimes than whites.

Rashia is a mother of three, she was a successful entrepreneur, and her family remembers her by being very loving and generous. She is no monster to the Tampa Bay community, but just a woman who was trying to find a means to provide for her family.

This petition has been created for her as a call to action, demanding the courts review her case and resentence her with the appropriate guideline calculation. At this time, she is set to be released in 2031. The time she has received for this crime is disproportionate to the crime itself. There has been no justice served on behalf of Rashia Wilson, but only for the government itself. We are asking that you take time to sign this petition as a start to help get justice for Rashia Wilson.
