Request a President's Executive Order Listening Session in Charleston, WV!
The Issue
On January 9th, the largest chemical drinking water contamination in the US occurred when crude MCHM leaked from an aboveground storage container into the Elk River in West Virginia's capitol city of Charleston. No significant toxicological tests were required since the chemical was grandfathered in under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). To date, very little is known about human exposure to this chemical. This incident highlights major loopholes in national chemical safety and security regulation. More than 300,000 people and over a third of West Virginians were impacted by this disaster. The EPA and Department of Homeland Security owe it to the people of West Virginia to hear our concerns directly and take them into account during the final public comment period of the President's Executive Order #13650 Improving Chemical Facility Safety and Security.
