Ban assault rifles and high powered ammunition

In the wake of the Aurora, Colorado shooting, it is imperative that we, as a nation, take action to stop these needless acts of violence from occurring. Please, let us all speak to the U.S. Congress and ban the possession and sale of automatic weapons.

This has nothing to do with the Second Amendment right to bear arms; this has to do with defining what "arms" means. The Supreme Court recently ruled in the Heller decision that the right to bear arms is a fundamental liberty protected under the bill of rights to our constitution. The decision left open what types of gun control laws are permissible.  While handguns, rifles and shotguns may have their place in our nation for purposes of self-defense and hunting, there is no rational reason for possessing an automatic assault rifle (outside of the military). The sole purpose of these weapons is to kill as many people as quickly as possible.

In addition to signing this petition, please also take the time to exercise your voice in our democracy and write to your U.S. Senators and Representative and ask them to take action to ban assault rifles. Please do not let another Columbine, Viginia Tech or Aurora incident happen again in our great country.
