The Issue

Tytherington High School has recently decided to reinforce strict uniform rules. This petition is for parents who appreciated the laxity before & think the new rules are overly officious and actually aren’t conducive to learning.

Kids aren’t automatons. Self-expression is good. It brings out a child’s character. They should feel safe & supported & comfortable to be themselves. An over-zealous approach to uniform will also unfairly affect kids from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

If kids feel like they’re being judged based on things that fundamentally don’t matter then they will lose respect for authority & disengage from learning. This is teenage psychology 101.

Ask yourselves why you have a mismatching sock day. What is that for? Why is it important? And then ask yourselves what you are telling the kids by coming down on them like a ton of bricks over uniform now.

We’re living in a world where employers are loosening uniform requirements. And workplaces are better for it. School should reflect that not archaic views of what constitutes “smart” or what an “ideal pupil” looks like. Because we’re all different. And even in smart clothes, different people express themselves differently depending on who they are.

We all bring something different to society. If you truly want to form A* students then you should help them to be the very best versions of themselves.
