Two Shootings in 3 Years — Demand Reform at Fort Stewart Now

The Issue

Another active shooter. More wounded soldiers. And once again, it happened at Fort Stewart.

On August 6, 2025, five service members were shot during an attack that placed the entire base on lockdown. Just three years earlier, in 2022, Army Sgt. Nathan M. Hillman was shot and killed by a fellow soldier on the same base.

That case is still pending. How many more incidents will it take before Fort Stewart receives the urgent reform and oversight it clearly needs?

This is not a fluke. It’s a failure.

We, the undersigned, are calling on the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, and congressional oversight committees to immediately launch a full investigation into security, threat detection, and internal safety measures at Fort Stewart.

This must include:

  • A review of the handling of prior warning signs
  • Mental health support structures for soldiers
  • Gun access and base-specific protocols
  • Emergency response preparedness
  • Transparency into both the 2022 and 2025 shooting investigations

Our soldiers put their lives on the line to defend this country. The very least we can do is ensure they are safe on their own base — not vulnerable to violence from within the ranks.

These tragedies are not isolated. They are evidence of systemic breakdowns that must be addressed. No more silence. No more delays. No more lives lost under the assumption that “this just happens.”

We demand answers. We demand change. And we demand accountability — now.
