Two-Semester College Soccer Season

The Issue

College soccer has largely used the same schedule since NCAA tournament begin in 1959.  Teams begin training in August.  Games start in late August or September. The tournament used to wrap up in November but was extended into December nearly 20 years ago. Schools are now allowed to play a limited spring schedule, but those games don't count toward the regular-season total.

The structure of college soccer as it stands now is archaic!

Soccer is a totally different game in the United States than it was 63 years ago.

D-1 programs currently ply once every three days, compared to once every seven days in most top-tier pro leagues, and a 2010 study showed that injuries were six times more likely when playing twice per week rather than once.

Establishing a 21st Century season model for college soccer (playing meaningful games in both fall and spring), would provide student-athletes to build more time for academics, while also maximizing a high level collegiate soccer experience throughout each academic calendar.

This two-semester model also makes sense for continued young player development, it's less taxing on the players and not crammed in to three months with the tournaments in the outdoor cold of late November to early December.

This model balances academics, athletics, campus life and personal life so kids can have a better experience in college. It complements what the intercollegiate model represents and incidentally, supports aspirations of those that want to be pro players.

Let's petition NCAA to make this change now!
