Within the past week, countless accounts on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have been posting videos of popular bands and singers that quickly cut to gory scenes of self-harm, suicide, torture, murder, and sexual assault, amongst other disturbing scenes. Additionally, these accounts are sending messages to people asking them about their biggest fear. When the person responds, they send them videos of extreme violence in the categories above. When reported, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok often do not take action on these accounts, citing that the basis for the reports are unfounded. Thousands of children use Instagram and other platforms daily and are vulnerable to seeing these posts and videos. Furthermore, no one deserves to be traumatized by these horrific videos and accounts. By not taking these accounts down, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok prove that the safety of their users is not prioritized to these companies.
