END “Eating disorder twitter” and #fatspo
The Issue
“Ed twitter” most known as “Eating Disorder Twitter” this is a awful term used to describe a community of young adults and teenagers on the social media app, Twitter. The community is known for having teenagers who suffer from eating disorders to come together and share how they starve and harm themselves. Not only that, they make others feel bad while doing it, shaming them for their appearance and comparing their bodies to model and celebrities . A recent hashtag has also been shared and used called #Fatspo, meaning that people suffering from an eating disorder use men and women who aren’t “skinny” as inspiration to keep using methods of starvation and self harm. They insult and degrade these men and women I was shocked to find out that innocent people are and used as “fatspo” for those suffering. We also need to bring attention to those who suffer from eating disorders. Personally I suffer from my self esteem and body issues and seeing MINORS on the social media app shaming themselves and creating a toxic community is saddening. I pray for everyone who suffers and for those those who use innocent people to make themselves feel better. This is truly saddening. Never in my life have i seen such a toxic place. Not only does this glorify unhealthy eating and self harm but it also goes to show that Twitter accepts this type of behavior on social media. Teenagers are the future generation, and it’s awful to see them suffer and hurt. Eating disorders shouldn’t be glorified or praised. Society has told young women that fair skin, bigger breasts, and small waists are the beauty standard. Society has told young men that abs, a sharp jawline and muscles and masculinity is key to being a man. This is all untrue, men and women shouldn’t have to live up to the ideal body type. This generation along with future generations shouldn’t have to suffer because of what society had put in place. You don’t have to be skinny to be beautiful, you don’t have to be muscular to be a man. Beauty comes from the inside. Not your body. We need to normalize ALL bodies. ALL BODIES ARE BEAUTIFUL! We need to make social media a safe place for everyone! and that includes shining a light and seeing what is going on this app. Twitter needs to make harmful hashtags and topics non accessible. Please stand with me to end this toxic community. We will not let the future generation children suffer . Please look at the hashtags on twitter (located down below) this is an example of what is going on. If you see any hashtags relating to eating disorders please report it! This includes things like nicknames for anorexia or bulimia ex. “Pro ana” (short for promotion of anorexia nervosa) or “meanspo”. These terms have been used to disguise the promotion of eating disorders in plain sight. Please fight with me to end this .We have to make a change .“Fatspo Twitter” and “#EDtwitter”.
