Banning the #proana, #thinspo, #edtwt, #meanspo, #bonespo and #promia tags on Twitter

The Issue

There are communities of people on Twitter helping each other worsen their eating disorders under the tags #meanspo (mean inspiration) #proana (pro anorexia), #edtwt (eating disorder Twitter), #thinspo (thin inspiration), #bonespo (bone inspiration) and #promia (pro bulimia). Having had an eating disorder myself, I can’t imagine ever trying to help others worsen their problems. Having an eating disorder is a nightmare and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. Instagram seems to not tolerate this kind of toxic, unhealthy, sharing of ideas, and neither should Twitter. It pains me to see other people my age encouraging each other to starve themselves and purge their food until they can see their ribs and hip bones. 2 other tags that are similar I want to cover are #thinspo (thin inspiration) / #bonespo (bone inspiration) tags used to post unhealthily skinny pictures of teens to encourage you to keep going with the unhealthy eating disorder habits. Finally I wanted to cover what #meanspo is, #meanspo is a tag where people say horrifically nasty things to each other in order to inspire them to keep starving themselves. It’s really damaging and awful things to say to a person and I can’t imagine what kind of thought process goes on that makes them think it’s okay to Tweet those things. It worries me and needs to come to an end. I encourage people to have conversations about eating disorders and how to overcome them, but groups that help worsen them need to be shut down. I hope you choose to sign, thank you for taking the time to read.❤️ National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) helpline: (800)-931-2237
