Brittoni Ward started this petition to Superintendent of TRUSD Steve Martinez

Twin Rivers Unified School District is trying to close numerous schools within the district as soon as next school year. D.W. Babcock Elementary is now on the list of school closures. The reasoning for closure from the district is that TRUSD is in a 1% deficit of their yearly budget. This is an extreme measure. Despite the district's commitment to their core belief to "engage students, staff, families, and communities with meaningful involvement and programs", it has been voted upon without the input and opinions of stakeholders.

It would be a travesty for our students, community, and educators to have our school closed. This closure would bring about more trauma towards our already trauma-impacted students. This includes our students in Special Day Classes (Bridge) who rely on consistency within their environment in order to be successful. Since our school is a neighborhood school, the greater majority of our students live right near the school and walk to and from daily. Closure of D.W. Babcock would make it increasingly difficult for students to attend school and puts their safety at risk.

Additionally, our school has been making positive achievements in academics, behavior, attendance, and the implementation of PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports). Our educators and staff work tirelessly to create and maintain a positive learning environment that not only reflects our passion for teaching, but also our affection towards the students and community.

If our school faces closure, our students face being transferred to another school that will be further from their community, potentially overcrowded, and lack the resources, services, and/or supports that they are able to obtain currently at D.W. Babcock. The majority of their teachers will not be transferring with them, as they will potentially be scattered and displaced among the district. We are asking you to please sign this petition to help put a stop to this closure that would greatly affect children, educators, and their families.
