Safer Access to the Tweed River Dive Site on Coral St Tweed Heads

Safer Access to the Tweed River Dive Site on Coral St Tweed Heads
The issue
As a community of Scuba Diver we are attempting to garner support for the installation of diver access stairs into the Tweed River Dive Site / Jack Evans Boat Harbour, near the carpark located on Coral Street in Tweed Heads.
Tweed Shire Council had installed a handrail to aid divers getting in and out of the river dive site but after a weld snapped causing the handrail to become unsafe it was removed and instead has left a dangerous post in its place. This handrail helped make this site accessible for many divers, some in training, some just fun diving and all ranging in age from 10 years of age up to 70+ years of age and all sorts of mobility levels including amputees.
We're petitioning for a set of access stairs similar to those installed by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority in the Gold Coast Seaway or more recently like Rye Pier in Victoria. These stairs would be hugely beneficial to improving ease off access and diver safety at the Tweed River dive site. Having a set of stairs either into the calmer waters of Jack Evans Boat Harbour itself or where the handrail was previously installed to enable divers of all ages and abilities to enter and exit in relatively safety and should a diver need to be removed from the water in a hurry, this would greatly increase the speed and efficency of any rescue.
Divers all over Southeast Queensland and Far North NSW will benefit hugely and by attracting more divers to this incredibly diverse dive site, local businesses will also receive the flow on benefits, apart from the obvious flow on effects for local dive businesses, food and beverage businesses will also get more trade as the divers almost always stop for a feed on the way home and normally a coffee on their way down.
