The Issue

The foghorn at Westport’s South Jetty is more than a navigational aid, it is the voice of our maritime heritage and a safeguard for all who work and recreate on the water. For generations, its sound has echoed across the harbor, guiding vessels through heavy fog and storm while offering comfort to families waiting on shore.

Today, that same foghorn still stands ready, but times have changed. Modern fishing and commercial vessels are built stronger, tighter, and more soundproof. While this protects crews from the elements, it also makes it harder to hear the horn when it matters most. In one of the foggiest regions on the West Coast, where more than 200 days of the year are shrouded in fog, louder is safer.

By increasing the volume of the foghorn, or even adding a second one, we can better protect our fishing fleet, commercial vessels, and recreational boaters. This is not just about sound, it’s about safety, tradition, and keeping alive the connection between our community and the sea. Enhancing the foghorn ensures Westport remains both a beacon of safety and a proud maritime town.
