Turn off the courtroom media cameras for the Highland Park shooter
The Issue
On July 4th, 2022, in Highland Park, IL, a mass shooting occurred at a 4th of July parade. At least 7 were killed, and at least 30 were injured. Today, the court handling the case allowed the media to broadcast the proceedings showing the killer's face and statements. Mass shooters thrive off of media attention and notoriety. Many have been explicit that this was their motive. Past mass shooters have reported that they watched media footage, like the one the court is allowing, and were inspired to follow suit and carry out a similar attack. This is a well documented phenomenon and a social contagion. For the safety of the public and out of respect for the victims, this footage must be stopped, and the court should not allow any broadcasting of the proceedings. Murderers of innocent men, women, and children should not be rewarded for this despicable act with hours of coverage which puts them in the spotlight and helps them realize their goal. The purpose of the criminal justice system is to deter would-be criminals and to deliver justice to victims. The court allowing the media to record and publish the proceedings goes directly against both of these goals as it incentivizes and inspires copycats and re-traumatizes the victims. Your voices are needed. Join me in telling the court not to allow this footage. It is time to turn off the cameras and deprive this person of the attention he was seeking.
