The Issue
Tuchel was brought in for one reason – elite in-game management.
This was so we could finally beat a big team and win something.
Against Argentina, when the moment came, how did he do? He failed.
Dropping deep and defending is the right move with 10 men against Mexico. You can even get away with it against Norway. But you cannot do it for 25 minutes against Argentina and Messi. They are too good. Everyone watching could see what was coming. It was utterly predictable – and predicted.
Has he learned from his mistakes?
No.
First, he blames the players for dropping deep and conceding chances before his first substitution. But his job is to prepare them for such a situation, and fix it if need be. Instead, his changes made it worse. He swapped our only winger for a defender. He invited Argentina onto us. He did exactly what they would have wanted him to do – and the Argentinian players have since said they were amazed that he did it. What was needed was obvious: fresh legs in midfield to stretch the game and give Argentina something to think about. They never came. What came was even more defenders, all lined up along the 18 yard box.
So now he blames "English DNA" – an inability to hold the ball. But our players win titles and European trophies with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Manchester City. We had, without doubt, the best squad on our side of the draw. Only France and Spain compare. We have the players.
The more he speaks, the worse it gets. No regret. No insight. No responsibility. It’s ok to make a mistake – but there’s no sign he knows he’s made one. Which means one thing is almost certain: he will make the same mistake again at the Euros in two years. We will beat the teams we are expected to beat – the Norways, the Austrias, the Polands. Then we will meet France, or Spain, or Portugal, and it will happen again. Just as in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024 and now 2026.
Forget taking Henderson and Burn. Forget having no reliably fit right back. Forget leaving Trent, Wharton and Gibbs-White at home.
He was brought in for elite in-game management, and he failed miserably.
Thomas Tuchel is a nice guy. But he has wasted our best chance of winning the World Cup since 1966. He has squandered our finest squad ever – with Kane still in his prime.
Not again. He must go.
