Truth and Inclusivity in the Canadian National Anthem

Truth and Inclusivity in the Canadian National Anthem

The Issue

As a young Canadian, I believe there is a responsibility to be honest about our country's history and push to make the meaningful steps towards change that aligns with the values of a modern nation. The words of our national anthem should reflect the truth and diverse values of our nation, ensuring that all Canadians feel represented and respected.

Our anthem, "O Canada," was adopted as our official national song in 1980, but the lyrics don't really capture the present day realities or values that we live by. The anthem's references to God and lack of acknowledgment of Indigenous peoples fail to represent the multicultural and diverse society that Canada has become. It is crucial that these words are revisited and revised to better align with Canada's commitment to inclusion, truth, and reconciliation.

The Canadian anthem is written without the intent of acknowledging Canada is not historically our land; it is indigenous land that was taken through colonization. The lyrics “our home and native land” fail to recognize this truth. I believe changing the words to “our home on native land” would be a small change, but better recognize Indigenous peoples and the history of the land, enabling the meaningful and necessary steps towards awareness and truth.

Secondly, the reference to god in the anthem is outdated. In today’s diverse and inclusive society, not everyone believes in god (or sometimes a variety), and that should be respected. The lyrics “god keep our land, glorious and free” should be replaced with “we’ll keep the land, glorious and free.” This is not only a more progressive change, but an anthem that includes all Canadians regardless of belief, while creating a collective responsibility to protect and cherish the country.

Canada prides itself on being a global leader in multiculturalism and progressive values. By modernizing our national anthem, we take a powerful and symbolic step towards creating a more inclusive and respectful society.

I urge the Canadian government and elected officials to take decisive action towards revising "O Canada." This change would mirror the goals of a nation striving for truth and inclusion.

Please join me in calling for an updated Canadian national anthem that truly reflects the values of our country. Sign this petition and be part of the change we all wish to see.
