The Issue

The Trump administration just suspended $584 million in federal grants to UCLA — a move that threatens vital research in medicine, energy, and public health.

If not reversed, this decision could devastate breakthrough work that impacts millions of lives.

UCLA’s research is not just about academia. It fuels cancer treatments, climate solutions, national security innovations, and medical discoveries that benefit every American. These grants come from the NIH, NSF, and Department of Energy — agencies that fund science, not politics.

The administration says the funding was frozen due to civil rights violations connected to campus protests. But punishing the entire university — students, researchers, and the public — for issues the school is actively addressing does nothing to protect civil rights. It only delays progress and puts jobs, discoveries, and lives at risk.

UCLA has already taken accountability steps, including a $6 million settlement, policy changes, and new initiatives to combat antisemitism and ensure student safety. Dialogue and oversight are important — but blanket defunding is reckless and dangerous.

Meanwhile, Columbia University faced similar allegations and reached a settlement that allowed its research funding to be restored. UCLA deserves the same opportunity.

We, the undersigned, demand that the Department of Education and the Trump administration immediately reinstate UCLA’s federal research funding. Civil rights enforcement must be real — but it must not come at the cost of innovation, public health, and national interest.

Let the scientists do their work. Let the students learn. And let the nation benefit from the breakthroughs this funding makes possible.
