The Issue

Since President Trump took office, his administration has been signing agreements to transfer the U.S. Department of Education's responsibilities to other agencies — moves congressional Democrats say go beyond the executive branch's legal authority. Now, House Republicans are moving to make those transfers permanent.

Last week, a House committee voted to scatter the department's functions across six agencies. Student loans — all $1.7 trillion — would move to the Treasury Department, with no guarantee borrowers keep the same protections. Funding and oversight for elementary schools, job training, and college access programs would shift to Labor.

Civil rights enforcement and special education oversight, already being moved without congressional approval, would land at the Justice Department and Health and Human Services, with no clear accountability when something goes wrong.

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) warned these proposals would inflict "pain and suffering on students, educators and their communities," according to States Newsroom.

This isn't reform, it's dismantling a 46-year-old institution that protects every student in America.

Sign now to demand Congress reject this bill before it's too late.
