Trump: Instead of Sending Warships, Start Negotiations with Iran Over Hormuz
The Issue
President Trump has publicly called on other nations to send warships to help secure and reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed amid the U.S.–Iran conflict and has disrupted global oil supplies.
The strait is one of the world’s most important energy trade routes, with roughly one-fifth of global oil passing through it. Oil prices have surged and markets are volatile. Many nations depend on the free flow of energy through this passage.
While security concerns are real, deploying warships risks widening the conflict — military escalation could make the situation worse for all involved.
Instead of calling for more military intervention, we urge President Trump to:
- Initiate direct negotiations with Iran specifically focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz peacefully
- Work with international partners, including NATO, China, and Gulf states, to broker a diplomatic de-escalation
- Prioritize diplomatic channels and conflict resolution mechanisms before expanding naval involvement.
The quickest, safest way to restore free passage through Hormuz is through negotiation and de-escalation — not more warships.
Tell President Trump:
Talk to Iran. End the threat. Reopen Hormuz through diplomacy.
