The Issue

I remember years ago when our town used to have open recreational time at the local elementary schools. It was a fantastic opportunity for kids to get out their energy during the cold winter months. Now that my own children are school-aged and passionate about playing basketball, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find indoor spaces where they can play and stay active.

The lack of available indoor recreational spaces in the winter limits opportunities for children to engage in physical activities. The winter months in our town can be harsh, making it challenging for kids to find safe and adequate places to participate in sports or simply exercise. With limited access to indoor facilities, children miss out on essential physical activity, which is crucial not only for their physical health but also for their mental well-being.

Providing open recreational time at school gyms would offer children a safe, structured environment to participate in sports, particularly basketball. This would encourage them to stay active and socialize with their peers, reducing the amount of time they spend in front of screens. Socializing in such engaging and athletic environments helps in fostering teamwork and developing communication skills among kids.

There is an increasing concern about the sedentary lifestyle of our children, especially during the colder months. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children and adolescents should have at least one hour of physical activity every day. However, with limited access to recreational facilities, meeting these guidelines becomes a challenge.

Our school's gyms are already equipped to host these activities. By reinstating the open gym policy, we can use these resources efficiently to benefit our community.

Join me in urging our town leadership to bring back open recreational hours at our local school gyms. Let's work together to ensure our children have a safe, welcoming environment to stay active, especially during the winter. Sign this petition and make a difference for the well-being of our kids. Together, we can influence positive change.
