Prohibit/ban firearm and ammunition sales within a one-mile radius of Frank Otis Elementary School, 3010 Fillmore St., Alameda CA 94501 by petition of the students of Frank Otis Elementary School's GATE program.

The Issue

IN HONOR OF OUR FELLOW OTIS STUDENT, GABRIEL MARTINEZ JR.

Since 1951, our school mission has been:  To be citizens who get involved in their community; are culturally literate and personally reflective; think critically about national/global issues; and use knowledge, talent, and understanding to build a healthy, just and generous society.  Lockdowns are a scary reality in our daily lives at school.  We want to do what we can to keep our school and community a safe place to live and grow, and we believe that starts with telling our community where our values lie.

The Citizens of Alameda, our parents and community leaders, drew up a petition to address our fears and concerns over two years ago after the shooting death of our classmate, Gabriel Martinez, Jr. and the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  They did not want us to have to face rifles, guns, and ammunition at businesses where we go to buy our balls, gloves, and bats.  The petition was ineffective.  The students at Frank Otis Elementary would like to self-advocate to have a more direct action taken. We are petitioning our Mayor, Trish Spencer, and our City Council and Planning Board to implement a City Ordinance that would ban firearm and ammunition sales within one mile of Frank Otis Elementary School.
