Incredibly this very inexpensive, life saving drug is not covered by either Tricare, Express Scripts or HealthNet, for sufferers of adrenal insufficiency. In cases of emergency, not having this drug is like a diabetic not having insulin, however the insurance companies don't think it's essential enough to be covered.  How do I know about this? My 6 month old baby boy was born with adrenal insufficiency and this medication has saved his life on at least one occasion already.  Sufferers of adrenal insufficiency, or their families, must pay for this drug out of pocket and we think this is deplorable. ABOUT ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY

Adrenal insufficiency can be caused by a number of conditions, including but not limited to Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, some cancers, pituitary tumors and more.  In the US alone, over 130,000 people suffer from adrenal insufficiency and take cortisone-based medications daily to sustain life.  In an emergency, additional cortisone (Solu-Cortef) is required by the body in order to avert a crisis.  If this medication is not administered via intramuscular injection immediately, the effects can lead to seizures, shock, heart failure, brain damage, even death.  Many ambulances don't carry this medication on board their trucks and waiting to get treatment at a hospital, in many cases can be too late for sufferers of adrenal insufficiency. Sufferers must carry emergency kits wherever they go, containing the life saving Solu-Cortef. A crisis can be caused by something a simple as a fever, vomiting or minor accident. Having Solu-Cortef is absolutely critical, but the insurance companies don't seem to think so!

These are the companies that provide health coverage and medications for our active duty, reservists and retired military as well as their family members.  These people have served countless hours, months and years serving their country.  The families have made enormous sacrifices along the way and for the insurance companies not to provide coverage for this very basic life saving medication is a complete travesty of justice!  We have tried contacting these companies directly, however, each just points the finger at the other as to who should or will not cover the medication. All we are asking is to have the cost of this medication covered so we can save the lives of our loved ones in an emergency.
