Transportation for All

The Issue

Everyone likes to go for a stroll, but walking should not be the only option for transportation. For too many locals this is the reality for nearly over 2 decades in the making. Unless a citizen is willing to pay over $15 to get around town you need to walk. To get groceries, pet food, or attending school all on foot. Suddenly small errands or little needs become a huge feats to accomplish.

Because mobility is a common challenge for many individuals with disabilities, they rely on public transportation to travel from place to place, such as running errands, visiting a friend, or healthcare visits. Public transportation enables mobility for people who do not have other transit options.

Driving to do those errands myself I've noticed, elderly and disabled people walking or pushing their own wheelchairs with their grocery bags on their lap on the Interstate Bridge.

The people are progressing and we need the help for the town to keep up. The economy doesn't benefit from transportation being unreliable. The buses would be ready for steady hours for most weather conditions instead of bracing the elements for each day.

Even during the short break of summer we have teens and young adults having to walk down poorly lit streets/allys to get to places quickly or make timely curfews with no options for public transportation.

Public Transportation is for more people than just those without a vehicle. Shifting from cars to public transportation can reduce up to 2.2 tons of carbon emissions annually per individual. If you do need to travel by car, carpooling can result in up to 1.0 tons of carbon emissions reduced. Doing daily chores can be easier on the planet too. Inlcuding transportation routes for stops within local businesses gives more traffic to the business without the hassle of finding a ride.

Public transport (also known as public transportation, public transit, mass transit, or simply transit) is a system of transport for passengers by group travel systems available for use by the general public unlike private transport, typically managed on a schedule, operated on established routes, and that may charge a posted fee for each trip.

Standard public transport cost in Wisconsin Single full fare rides will be $2.00 with a 90 minute transfer on a WisGo card or in the Umo app. Single reduced fare rides will be $1.00 with a 90-minute transfer on a WisGo card or in the Umo app. Cash riders will not receive a transfer. Meanwhile Grand Rapids offers adult single rides for $1.75 and monthly passes for $47. Check out the new smart card. Catch The Wave and that gets you the best value every time. Tickets can be purchased on board with cash.

Historically, a railroad ferry named the Ann Arbor Railroad, connected the twin city of Menominee, Michigan to Frankfort, Michigan via the Sturgeon Bay ship canal in the Door Peninsula, Wisconsin. There is currently no ferry service to Marinette or Menominee.
