Transport for Greater Manchester: A Bus route From Withington to Sackville Street (Piccadilly station)

The Issue

We, the students at the University of Manchester, believe there is a great demand for a new bus route from Withington to Sackville Street/Piccadilly station. This route which will solve a great number of transportation issues for both students and the community alike. The proposed route will directly benefit students who live in Withington or Fallowfield and study in North Campus on Sackville Street. It will also benefit students who travel to University by train and have to attend lectures on South Campus on Oxford Road. Furthermore it will be an essential bus route for the many students who study on both North and South campus, and have to travel between these locations frequently. It has been estimated over 5000 students will use this bus route every day, as well as many members of the community who rely on transportation from Withington to Piccadilly station. This bus route will greatly benefit the local community whilst creating an easily accessible and unified campus for the University of Manchester.

The proposed route will increase both the safety of students and the community by providing direct access from Withington to Piccadilly/Sackville Street. It will be particularly valuable to members of the community and students with disabilities, who currently feel uncomfortable walking from the old BBC building to Sackville Street or from Piccadilly Gardens to Piccadilly train station.

We understand there is a 147 bus route; however this does not meet the current demand. Firstly it only runs from 7:15am to 6:30pm on weekdays only, this does not meet the demands of both students and the community alike who work much later than this in the evening, and require the route on weekends. Secondly, the bus route stops at the hospital on oxford road. It is essential for the students and community that there is a direct bus to Fallowfield and Withington.
