Change the Pronunciation of Glendalough on the Transperth trainline

The Issue

In Ireland, Glendalough is a glacial valley in Co. Wicklow, however, in Perth, Glendalough is a suburb in the City of Stirling, in the northern suburbs of Perth. This suburb was named such to “honour a Catholic centre in Ireland” (as put by the City of Stirling). There is a transit station on the Joondalup train line named Glendalough Station. For those living in Perth and have been on the trains, you’ll know that there is an automated voice informing passengers of the upcoming station and again when arriving at such station. If you catch the train that goes through Glendalough station, you will notice that the pronunciation isn’t the same as the pronunciation of the Irish town it was so famously named after. On the train line (and by a large majority of the Australian residents familiar with the area) pronounce Glendalough as if it were ‘Glendalow’, rather than the correct pronunciation, ‘Glendalock’ (both written phonetically). It can be assumed that as majority of these residents are not familiar with the Irish town or that this suburb is named after it, they say it as they understand it to be pronounced. Changing the pronunciation of the train station on the train lines will influence how others pronounce it, and slowly this may impact the appreciation of the origin of Glendalough. As an Irish born person, and an Australian citizen, it is hard when it comes to the under-appreciation of the impact Ireland truly has on Australia as well as the rest of the world. Signing this petition and potentially getting the name changed won’t make a drastic change, but it is important to recognise the cultural importance of such countries. I would really appreciate if you could sign this petition and help take a step towards better cultural appreciation.
