The Issue

We, the undersigned students, are requesting timely, clear, and detailed communication from university leadership regarding a reported environmental health and safety incident involving suspected mercury contamination and potential vapor spread through campus infrastructure, including interconnected steam tunnels and multiple academic buildings.

We recognize that universities may need time to verify environmental data and coordinate response efforts. However, given the potential severity of mercury exposure and its known neurological and respiratory health risks, we believe that students and staff have a right to transparent, safety-relevant information in order to make informed decisions about their health and daily campus activity.

We respectfully request the university provide the following information to the campus community as soon as it is verified and available:

Confirmed scope of the incident
Which buildings and/or campus areas have been tested
Which locations have returned positive or concerning results
Air and environmental testing details
What testing methods are being used for mercury vapor detection
What safety thresholds are being applied for clearance decisions
Dates of inspections and follow-up testing
Infrastructure and spread assessment
Whether steam tunnels or building ventilation systems are considered possible pathways of spread
Whether cross-building contamination is still being evaluated
Exposure risk communication
Whether students, faculty, or staff may have been exposed
Recommended precautions for campus occupants
Any symptoms or health guidance being advised
Response and remediation efforts
Steps being taken to contain and remediate contamination
Whether external agencies (e.g., fire department hazmat teams, county health department, OSHA, or environmental consultants) are involved
Ongoing updates
A commitment to regular public updates as new verified information becomes available
