TRANSPARENCY & CONSULTATION FOR COPPABELLA RESIDENTS
Petition to QRI-Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer.
We, the undersigned residents, families and supporters of the Coppabella community, call on QRI to provide transparency, meaningful consultation and clear communication regarding decisions that may affect the future of Coppabella and its residents.
Why this matters-
Coppabella is not simply a mining accommodation facility. It is a community.
Growth and development should not come with the demise of more than 50 years of history, community and belonging.
People have lived here for many years. Families have raised children here, children attend the local school, residents work in the region, businesses rely on the community, and people contribute to the social fabric of the town.
Residents are increasingly concerned about uncertainty surrounding the future of residential housing and the direction of Coppabella.
Concerns being raised include:
- Reports that some residential leases may not be renewed due to a need to make housing available to mining companies or their workforce.
- Uncertainty about the criteria and process used when deciding whether existing leases are renewed.
- The planned expansion of QRI Village mining accommodation and the potential impact on permanent residents and residential housing.
- Concerns regarding changes to expectations around pets and animals.
- A lack of clear and consistent information regarding QRI's long-term plans for Coppabella.
Residents may need to make decisions about their homes, employment, children's education and their future in Coppabella.
People should not have to rely on rumours or informal conversations to understand what is happening within their community.
OUR REQUEST:
We respectfully call on QRI's Board and CEO to engage directly with the Coppabella community, to discuss the below and provide clear information about the future of the township and establish an open and ongoing process of communication and consultation with residents.
1. Hold a community meeting:
Arrange a community meeting with representatives of the QRI Board and CEO within 30days, so residents can ask questions and receive clear answers directly.
2. Communicate QRI's long-term vision:
Provide residents with clear information about QRI's long-term vision and plans for Coppabella, including any significant proposed changes to the township which include QRI facilities and businesses.
3. Provide transparency around residential leases: Explain the current policy, criteria and process for residential lease renewals and new applications, including whether housing requirements for mining companies or their workforce are influencing decisions affecting existing rental properties and the impact this will have on our local school.
4. Explain proposed accommodation expansion: Provide information about the expansion and location of mining accommodation expansion, including the potential impact to residential housing.
5. Clarify pet and animal policies: Clearly communicate current policies regarding pets and animals, including how those policies apply to existing residents and existing arrangements.
6. Commit to ongoing communication:
Establish a commitment to regular, timely and transparent communication with residents whenever significant decisions or workings may affect the community.
7. Give residents a genuine opportunity to be heard: Provide residents with reasonable opportunities to ask questions, raise concerns and participate in consultation about matters that may significantly affect their homes and community while also providing contact details on who we can confidentially contact if issues arise.
This petition is about respectful dialogue.
We acknowledge that QRI has commercial responsibilities and that development and operational decisions sometimes need to be made.
This petition is not opposed to mining, development or changes to Coppabella.
It is a request for transparency, consultation, consistency and respect.
The people who call Coppabella home deserve clear information about decisions that may affect their future.
