Transform zoos into ethical breeding centers

Transform zoos into ethical breeding centers
The Issue
Transform Zoos into Ethical Breeding Centers
Recently, we visited a zoo hoping to witness the wonder of wildlife, but instead we were confronted with the unsettling reality about their impact on animal welfare. This experience opened our eyes to the neglect and harm that many animals have to face.
While zoos claim to protect animals and serve conservation purposes, the harsh reality is that many animals suffer due to confinement, inadequate living conditions, and poor care. Furthermore, the capture of wild animals for these exhibits often results in fatalities. Disturbing data from reputable sources highlights these issues: According to a study published in Nature Communications, an estimated 700,000 birds and mammals are taken from the wild annually. Only a small fraction contribute to conservation efforts. Many other reputable organizations such as The Humane Society reiterate that traditional zoos are insufficient in their conservation roles.
Instead of continuing these practices, it is time to bring change. Zoos can be transformed into ethical breeding centres that focus on protecting endangered species.
These centres can make sure animals are well cared for while also supporting conservation in a responsible way. For example, some sanctuaries and conservation organisations have successfully used breeding programmes to help increase animal populations.
In fact, certain endangered species, like the Arabian oryx, have been brought back from very low numbers through well-managed breeding efforts.
This change can start with people becoming more aware and speaking up. When more people support this cause, zoos and decision-makers can be encouraged to improve how animals are treated.
We can push for better rules so that zoos are more transparent about animal care and focus more on conservation and ethical practices.
