I have loved Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park since I was a child. Its wide-open spaces and rich, natural beauty have been a constant joy in my life, providing a sanctuary for many native species and a haven for local families and visitors alike. However, I believe Tilden can offer more than just a place for recreation; it can become a crucial sanctuary for the critically endangered California Condor.

The California Condor is North America’s largest flying bird with a wingspan of up to 9.5 feet, but its population sadly dwindled to just 22 in the 1980s. Thanks to successful breeding programs, there are now over 300+ in the wild, yet these magnificent birds remain critically endangered. They face numerous threats such as lead poisoning, habitat destruction, and microtrash ingestion. Establishing a sanctuary in Tilden Regional Park would provide a safe haven for these birds, increase their population, and create new opportunities for conservation education.

Tilden Regional Park, with its vast open spaces, diverse ecosystems, and dedicated conservation team, is ideally suited to aid in the recovery of the California Condor. By converting parts of Tilden into a protected sanctuary, we can offer a new home for these majestic creatures, while also boosting the park’s ecosystem. Better yet, it makes observing the condors accessible to thousands of Bay Area residents without requiring a long journey to Southern California.

Moreover, the presence of these birds could potentially elevate the park's tourist interest, drawing bird enthusiasts from all over, which would bring economic benefits to the surrounding community. It also presents an invaluable opportunity for educational programs that can inspire thousands of schoolchildren about the importance of protecting our planet’s biodiversity.

We urge the East Bay Regional Park District, conservation organizations, and local government bodies to collaborate on developing a feasible and effective plan to transform Tilden Regional Park into a sanctuary for the California Condor. This project can set a precedent for urban wildlife conservation efforts across the nation, demonstrating how our parks can play an active role in preventing species extinction.
