The Issue

Growing up in Southington, CT, the old church on Savage Street has always been more than just a building to me and many others in this community. I passed by it almost every day, catching the bus, and participated in various community activities within its walls. Its a symbol of our neighborhood's history and shared experiences. However, its future is now uncertain and I believe we have a unique opportunity to repurpose it in a way that enriches our community as a whole.

Currently, there's a proposal to convert this historic structure into a parking lot and elderly housing. While I understand the need to support our elders—who represent 21.1% of Southington's population—I believe turning this site into a community center would serve an even broader purpose. Why limit the benefits of this space to just one segment of the population when we could create a hub that fosters connection, learning, and support for everyone in Southington?

Imagine a place where young people can gather after school, where local artists can showcase their work, or where residents can access classes and resources that enhance their well-being. A community center could host events, provide crucial services, and be open to everyone. From hosting town meetings to offering after-school programs or adult education courses, the potential uses are endless and could be tailored to the evolving needs of our diverse residents.

Turning the church into a community center would preserve a piece of our town's history while creating a vibrant, inclusive space that reflects our present and future ambitions. We owe it to ourselves to dream bigger and think about how best we can invest in our community's infrastructure for everyone's benefit.

Please join us in urging our town leaders to reconsider the current plans in favor of a community center that benefits all Southington residents. Sign this petition to help reimagine our beloved church as a place where everyone feels they belong.
