Transform Sallie Mae Private Loans into Public Loans

Transform Sallie Mae Private Loans into Public Loans
The Issue
I am one of the countless millennials whose life has been drastically impacted by Sallie Mae loans. Like many others, I have delayed significant life milestones such as marriage, home ownership, and having children in order to pay off my student loan debt. This is a reality for many of us who were persuaded to sign up for a Sallie Mae student loan from our universities.
Sallie Mae received substantial financial support from the government years ago. However, instead of using this assistance to alleviate the burden on borrowers like myself, they continue to operate as private lenders with high interest rates and inflexible repayment plans.
According to the Institute for College Access & Success (TICAS), 69% of college students from public and nonprofit colleges in 2018 had student loan debt averaging $29,200 per borrower. This is an alarming figure that continues to rise each year.
We believe it's time for a change. We propose that legislation be enacted turning Sallie Mae private loans into public loans which would allow more flexible repayment options and lower interest rates benefiting millions across the country.
This isn't just about me or any individual; it's about all of us who are struggling under this heavy burden placed upon us at an early age. Let's stand together and demand change now! Please sign this petition urging lawmakers to transform Sallie Mae private loans into public ones.
