Transform Salem, Massachusetts into a Sanctuary City for Transgender Individuals

The Issue

Embracing diversity has been at the core of my personal values as an American. This great nation is graced by vibrant personalities of all genders, races, and religions playing harmonious symphonies of unique individuality, an attribute that make this country beautiful. It is from this richly textured tapestry of identities that I request your support in making Salem, Massachusetts a sanctuary city for transgender individuals.

In spite of positive societal strides toward acceptance and understanding, many transgender people still face substantial threats of discrimination and violence in their day-to-day lives. In 2020 alone, a staggering 44 transgender people were fatally shot or killed by other violent means in the United States, the majority of them being Black and Latinx transgender women (Source: Human Rights Campaign). This does not even account for the multitudes who suffer silently in the face of non-lethal forms of oppression, disenfranchisement and prejudice.

Salem, known universally for its historical commitment to social justice, has an opportunity to reaffirm its legacy in a contemporary manner. By declaring itself a sanctuary city for transgender people, it can set a beacon of hope, tolerance, and acceptance that stretches beyond its borders.

Let us come together in support of our transgender brothers, sisters, and non-binary siblings. Let's elevate human rights, dignity and love above all else. Change starts with us. It starts here, in Salem. By signing this petition, you are acknowledging the strengths of our shared diversity and taking a stand for a future in which everyone has the right to live authentically, without fear. Your signature is not just a sign of support, but a call for action, for recognition, for respect and above all, for love and acceptance. Please, sign this petition today.
