Transform Queen Margaret’s into a Place of Healing

The Issue

Having personally experienced the struggles of escaping domestic violence and finding a safe haven, I understand the importance of accessible, secure, and supportive spaces for survivors. This is why the proposal to repurpose Queen Margaret Boarding School in Escrick as a sanctuary for victims of domestic violence and as a centre for rehabilitation programs is not just a logistical consideration but a transformative opportunity to bring positive social change to our community.

Queen Margaret Boarding School sits as a beacon of heritage and tradition, a place long associated with nurturing growth and learning. We propose maintaining the estate as it is, preserving its architectural beauty while reimagining its purpose to serve those in immediate need. With its spacious grounds and facilities, the school is ideally suited to provide refuge and support services for individuals and families in crisis, offering them not only a safe space but also the tools and guidance necessary for rebuilding their lives.

The alarming rise in cases of domestic violence during recent years, compounded by the inadequacies of current support structures, underscores the urgent need for this sanctuary. According to government statistics, domestic abuse-related crime has increased by 6% in the past year, with North Yorkshire being no exception to these distressing figures. By converting Queen Margaret Boarding School, we have the chance to create an environment where survivors can not only find safety but also receive holistic support through innovative rehabilitation programs utilising existing resources such as 9 music rooms, an extensive library, food technology, arts, drama and sports facilities.

Local councils and police departments are often stretched thin, unable to meet the full scope of needs presented by those fleeing dangerous situations. This sanctuary offers a proactive solution, bridging the gap between emergency services and long-term recovery, ultimately alleviating pressure on public resources and enhancing public safety in Yorkshire and the UK.

Let's urge local decision-makers to consider this impactful proposal. By signing this petition, we can together advocate for the transformation of Queen Margaret Boarding School into a haven for healing and hope, protecting both our heritage and our most vulnerable residents. Sign the petition to bring about this urgently needed change for our community.
