About Us and Our Mission

We are a group of long-time San Marino residents committed to enhancing the recreational opportunities in our community. Our current focus is on meeting the growing demand for pickleball, an increasingly popular sport that fosters physical activity, inclusivity, and social connection. Our goal is to convert three underutilized tennis courts at the San Marino Tennis Center located in Lacy Park into pickleball courts to better serve our residents. Who is impacted?

The San Marino community has long enjoyed the use of the tennis courts at the San Marino Tennis Center. However, as interests shift and new recreational activities gain popularity, it has become clear that the current facilities no longer meet the needs of all residents. Specifically, the rising demand for pickleball, a sport beloved for its accessibility and appeal to all age groups, is unmet. Without dedicated courts, local pickleball enthusiasts – including seniors seeking a low-impact activity, families looking for inclusive recreation, and individuals hoping to stay active – are left without a space to play. Meanwhile, many of the existing tennis courts remain underutilized for much of the day, leaving a significant portion of our community underserved by the current setup.

What is at stake?

If we act now to convert three of the six tennis courts into eight pickleball courts, we will create a more balanced, inclusive environment that caters to a wider range of residents. This change would bring vital benefits to the community, promoting physical health, social interaction, and a sense of connection for people of all ages. On the other hand, if things remain as they are, the underutilization of our tennis courts will continue, and we will miss a critical opportunity to serve the growing demand for pickleball. The San Marino Tennis Center will remain limited in its offerings, and many residents will be forced to seek recreational facilities outside our city, diminishing the sense of community that comes from shared local activities.

Why is now the time to act?

Now is the perfect time to make this change. With the rapid rise of pickleball’s popularity across the nation and in our own community, we must act before demand outpaces our ability to provide appropriate facilities. More importantly, the longer we delay, the longer a significant portion of our residents will be without access to the activities they love. By taking immediate action, we can make San Marino a leader in community-centered recreation, ensuring that our residents have the resources they need to stay active and engaged. This is a unique opportunity to proactively adapt to the changing needs of our community, while simultaneously addressing the underutilization of our current tennis courts.
