The Issue

India is home to an extensive network of roads, stretching over 5.5 million kilometers, ranking second globally in terms of road length. Despite this vast web, the quality of these roads often leaves much to be desired, with numerous roads being riddled with potholes, uneven surfaces, and lack of proper maintenance. This issue not only impacts the daily lives of millions of commuters but also significantly contributes to road accidents and economic inefficiencies.

Poor road quality can lead to increased vehicle maintenance costs, longer travel times, and higher fuel consumption, affecting both individuals and businesses alike. The World Bank estimates that transportation and logistics costs account for 14% of India's GDP, higher than many other countries, largely due to poor road infrastructure. Enhancing road quality is not just a matter of convenience—it's an economic imperative.

Moreover, the statistics regarding road safety in India are alarming. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in 2019 alone, over 449,000 accidents were reported, with poor road conditions being a significant contributing factor. Although the government has initiated road development projects, the pace of improvement is not enough to meet the demands of a rapidly urbanizing population.

To address these challenges, it is crucial to implement a multi-faceted strategy. Investing in advanced road construction techniques, improving regular maintenance regimes, and employing smart technologies for real-time road condition monitoring are essential steps. Additionally, a public accountability platform could help ensure that funds allocated for road development are used efficiently and transparently.

We call upon the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India to prioritize road quality improvement by increasing budgets for road maintenance, adopting international best practices in construction, and actively involving local communities in monitoring road conditions. Improving these roads will boost the economy, decrease the accident rate, and enhance the quality of life for millions of Indians.
