Transform City Parks into Biodiverse Habitats for Birds, Bees, and Butterflies

Transform City Parks into Biodiverse Habitats for Birds, Bees, and Butterflies
The Issue
Since 1970, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we have lost 3 billion birds in North America. This is due to a combination of habitat destruction, the overuse of pesticides and invasive plants replacing native species.
It’s time to reverse that trend. Our city parks which are, in many cases, large expanses of grass monoculture, hold untapped potential to support diverse ecosystems. Let's use that potential. Let's convert parts of these parks into thriving environments of native plants fostering a safe haven for vital pollinators like birds, bees, and butterflies. A prime location, the vacant land in the 4100 block of Yale St, has already been identified as the first potential site for a pollinator park.
Creating such spaces not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of our city, but it has significant environmental benefits. According to the National Wildlife Federation, restoring native plant habitats is fundamental to the survival and prosperity of wildlife species, especially birds, butterflies, and bees, essential pollinators in any ecosystem.
Moreover, urban greening projects have shown potential in terms of economic and social benefits. Studies indicate that green spaces in urban areas can reduce crime rates, boost property value, mitigate urban heat island effects, and improve people's mental health (The Trust for Public Land).
Wildscaping Our Neighbourhood Society calls upon our city's authorities to take the first step towards true environmental responsibility - bringing back our native biodiversity one park at a time. Recognize the importance of biodiversity by including it as a core objective in Burnaby City Planning. Sign this petition if you stand for creating biodiverse habitats in our city parks.Brought to you by: https://wonsociety.org
