Transform 100 Acres of Peace Portal Golf Course into a Permanent Public Park

Transform 100 Acres of Peace Portal Golf Course into a Permanent Public Park

The Issue

Please sign this petition in support of a recent proposal to the City of Surrey, which would preserve 100 acres of sculpted land for permanent park purposes. In our rapidly growing community, the addition of usable parkland is becoming increasingly rare. Once an area becomes established, parks of this quality and scale can not be built or acquired.

Under this proposal, 50 acres of the Peace Portal Golf course would be excluded from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and converted into single-family homes. The remaining 100 acres of the golf course would stay in the ALR and be donated to create a highly accessible park. The new park would promote biodiversity on many levels by eliminating chemicals and water consumption commonly used on golf courses, making it more wildlife and people-friendly.

Currently, this pristine land serves an exclusive group of golfers, thereby excluding everyone else from enjoying its meandering paths, rolling hills, mature forests, and immense usable green space.

Your support will help ensure that future generations can enjoy the park as a place of respite, connection, and fulfillment. Parks are embedded in the fabric of a community and our culture – their names and integrity outlive residents and establishments for generations. Help turn this vision into a reality and create a space for all to enjoy, forever.

Details to note: Step 1 of the proposal involves the exclusion of ALR land. The golf course predates the creation of the ALR by decades, has never been farmed and is likely unfit for future agricultural purposes. The Agricultural Land Commission will ultimately make this exclusion decision.

Following this step, the City of Surrey would initiate a public consultation process to gather input on infrastructure, park amenities, and other considerations. One hundred acres provides significant potential for a wide range of habitat enhancements and programming, including tennis and pickleball courts, community gardens, and dog parks – among other offerings. Future public feedback will play a key role in determining the specific offerings and features of the park.
