Transfer the Animals of the Puerto Rico Zoo to the US before they all Die!

The Issue

The Dr. Juan A. Rivero Puerto Rico Zoo located in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico is in atrocious conditions.  As of today, there are supposedly 344 animals.  Recently, a reporter from Puerto Rico took a tour of the Zoo and saw how deplorable the conditions are.  The worst of all are the two US Black Bears who are confined to a small cage, in an area with no ventilation.  As you, all are well aware; Puerto Rico has extremely hot weather so these animals must be suffering horribly.

As of today one of the black bears, Nina, who was not even 10 years old, has died.  She had not moved in a five days and when the employees of the Zoo moved her she was full of ulcers with maggots.  The Zoo said she died of Health Complications.  If she did not move in five (5) days and no one checked on day 2 to see what was going on, most definitely those maggots would be health complications.  Isn’t this the epitome of Animal Abuse?  How much longer are do the people have to beg, plea, and request that the Zoo be closed and all the animals be transferred to Animal Sanctuaries where they can live out the remainder of their lives being cared for, content, healthy and in peace?   The Wildcats Sanctuary in Minnesota is one who has been and is open to receive animals.  Other Sanctuaries in the U.S. are willing to step up and help.

In 2017, the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revoked the Mayaguez’ Zoo Animal Welfare Act license to exhibit animals.  Many agencies and groups have requested the Puerto Rico Government do the right thing and let these animals be relocated to sanctuaries around the US.  Their excuse is that some are too old and/or sick and it would not be safe to move them.  Whose fault is it that they are sick?  If these animals were treated with the care and decency the way any of the statewide zoos treat their animals they would not be in this condition.  If the Zoo is closed and is not receiving income from Visitor fees, then way are the animals still there?  In this video (https://www.facebook.com/520003891/videos/996602494647581/ the Attorney Luis Pabon Roca from Puerto Rico, shares on a television interview that the Zoo is being kept with emporary funds of ARPA.  What will happen when these funds run out and no longer renewed?  How many more animals need to die before these animals be treated humanely?

There are links below to different news articles where people have been asking the government to do the right thing, not only the Puerto Rican Government but also the U.S. Government in reclaiming these animals.  The Zoo ran under a USDA license, the American Black Bear that passed away, who is just the most recent of the victims of this Abuse, her name was Nina, and she was then a U.S. Black Bear.  Doesn’t that count for anything?   If the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on October 15 recognizes Pablo Escobar’s hippos as the first non-human, creatures to be legally considered people in the US.  (Please refer to: https://www.iflscience.com/pablo-escobars-cocaine-hippos-have-been-recognized-legally-as-people-in-us-first-61384  These animals should also be considered people in the U.S. and have a right to be treated fairly and be protected by the The Animal Welfare Act (AWA), which was signed into law on August 24, 1966.  The Act is enforced by USDA, APHIS, and Animal Care.

I am asking the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis; the US Department of Agriculture; and the White House to make the Government of Puerto Rico let these animals go and be transferred to Sanctuaries where they can live the rest of their natural lives in a better place.  Government of Puerto Rico, for once, do the right and decent thing and let these animals be transferred to the Mainland where they will be treated, housed and fed in a better manner than what they have been all the time they have been in Puerto Rico.
