20's Plenty For Altrincham: calling for 20mph speed limits on residential roads
The Issue
Our community could become far safer, cleaner and more pleasant, just by sharing our roads a little better.
20's Plenty For Us is the campaign to make all our communities more people-friendly by reducing vehicle speeds on residential roads and in our town centres.
We are campaigning locally for 20mph speed limits to be introduced on all residential roads in Altrincham ward.
Who gains?
- Children will be safer.
- Parents will more happily allow their children to walk or cycle to school.
- Adults, and especially the elderly, will feel able to walk or cycle more.
- Better access for people with vision problems or other disabilities.
- Less traffic noise and better air quality.
- Our streets will become more pleasant places to live.
Who loses?
- Hospitals and the emergency services will be less busy.
- Garages won't have as much business repairing damaged vehicles.
- Some journeys will take a few seconds longer.
One in five households in Altrincham has no car
Roads are shared by all residents. We all have the right to get around our neighbourhood safely. The speed at which some people drive, just to save seconds on their journey, can become the greed which prevents others from feeling safe and secure while walking or cycling.
No costly, unpleasant speed bumps
The law now allows 20mph speed limits to be set, without the need for physical traffic calming. This can be down across a large area, for less than the cost of a few traffic lights.
20mph is normal
Increasingly, towns across Europe and now in the UK are setting speed limits of 20mph or lower for most residential roads. 30mph was just a figure plucked from thin air in the 1930s.
20mph works
When Portsmouth put 20mph limits across all residential roads, average
speeds dropped by 7mph. Hull's 20mph zones reduced child pedestrian casualties by 74%.
Only 10% of Trafford residents use a bicycle regularly
In many European towns, 25% or more of short trips are made by
bicycle, encouraged by lower vehicle speeds.
Trafford Council needs to catch up
20mph is now the default limit for residential roads in Bristol, Warrington, Newcastle, Oxford, Lancashire, and Porsmouth. Transport for London want it in all London boroughs.
We deserve the same!
