Traffic light on Catherine Avenue

The Issue

This section of roadway in Pasadena, Maryland experiences heavy traffic daily, with particularly dangerous conditions during morning and evening rush hours. Vehicles frequently travel at high speeds and traffic congestion is constant. As a result, there have been ongoing traffic accidents in this area, especially during peak commuting times.

These unsafe conditions led to a devastating and preventable loss. My sister was struck and killed while attempting to cross the road to return to her workplace. Her death has deeply affected our family and our community. No one should lose their life simply trying to get back to work, and no family should have to endure this kind of tragedy.

The absence of a traffic light and a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk continues to put lives at risk. Residents, workers, and commuters are forced to make dangerous decisions every day because traffic flow is not properly regulated. Without immediate action, it is only a matter of time before another serious injury or loss of life occurs.

We are urgently requesting that the appropriate Pasadena and Anne Arundel County authorities take action by installing a traffic light and a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk at this location. These safety measures would slow vehicle speeds, improve traffic flow during rush hours, and provide a safe, designated crossing point for pedestrians.

This petition is a call for change, accountability, and safety. We ask our local leaders to act now to protect our community and ensure that no other family has to experience a loss like this. Something must change—now.

By signing this petition, you are supporting safer streets and the protection of lives in Pasadena, Maryland.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the community’s petition for traffic and pedestrian safety improvements along Catherine Avenue in Anne Arundel County. Please accept my condolences for the loss of Ms. Remmey. We mourn every loss of life on Maryland roads, and I appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns. The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is responsible for overseeing more than 17,000 miles of numbered, non-toll roads in the State’s 23 counties. The remaining roads are maintained by local counties, towns, and other public works departments. You can verify road ownership in Maryland at Know Your Roads (https://maryland.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=14f27a6cab51422dabdfb168ca603482) . In this case, Catherine Avenue is managed by Anne Arundel County. I am sharing your concerns with Mr. Samuel Snead, Anne Arundel County Department of Transportation (AACDOT) Director, so that he can respond to you directly. You can reach Mr. Snead at 410-222-7440 or transportation@aacounty.org. Thank you again for contacting me. I appreciate hearing from you.
