The Issue

Ava a young girl who was loved by many tragically passed due to a very preventable issue everyone should be aware of.

Highway 22 has an exit to a left and right turn leading to highway 90, a very well known turn for many young students and parents. Highway 90 is also the main entry to a well known high school called Atlantic Collegiate Academy. Ava was a student at ACA and as usual she would take a left hand turn onto 90 to get to school. However, she was t-boned one morning. She has since passed away due to this accident,  leaving many who knew this sweet girl distraught.

My brother attends ACA and is a very new driver like many of the students there. He has to make this dangerous turn to get to school everyday and I would never want anything like this accident to happen to him. For many parents this is also a concern for their children.

Due to this a traffic light should most definitely be added to substitute the dangerous turn. It has already taken one innocent life and it should never happen again.

A traffic light will not only keep all students safe from fatal crashes like this but it will also help parents or siblings have peace of mind knowing our new drivers will make it to school.

Help us honor Ava and make this much needed change!

Thank you to everyone who has raised concerns about the need for a traffic signal in the eastbound exit on Highway 22. I understand the importance of roadway safety and the frustration many residents feel. I want to clarify that this matter falls primarily under the jurisdiction of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and county-level transportation authorities. As a member of Horry County Council, we do not have direct control over the installation of traffic signals on state highways. That said, there are plans already in motion for a traffic signal at the eastbound exit at Highway 22 and Highway 90. This signal is tied to the construction of a medical center across the road. The project includes a small emergency facility, and the traffic signal will be triggered as part of that development. The medical center has already obtained the necessary encroachment permits for this work. While I do not have a firm timeline, my understanding is that this is not a long-term project and should move forward within the next few years as the medical facility is built. At this time, SCDOT does not have separate plans for additional signals in that area beyond what is tied to the medical center project. I appreciate residents staying engaged on this issue and encourage continued communication with SCDOT as well, since they ultimately oversee signal approvals and roadway modifications. — Mark Causey Horry County Council, District 9
